What to Know Before Ordering Custom Tempered Glass in Southwest Florida

Custom tempered glass is one of those upgrades that looks effortless once it's installed — but there's a lot of precision work that happens before a single panel reaches your home or office. If you're planning a project in Naples, Bonita Springs, Marco Island, Fort Myers, or anywhere in Southwest Florida, here's what you should know before you order.

What Makes Glass "Tempered"?

Tempered glass is standard float glass that has been heated to over 1,100°F and then rapidly cooled. This process — called quenching — creates internal compression that makes the glass four to five times stronger than untreated glass. More importantly, when tempered glass does break, it shatters into small, rounded pebbles rather than sharp shards. That's why it's required by building code for shower enclosures, railings, and any glass near a door or floor.

At Valkyrie Glass Systems, every piece we fabricate is 100% tempered. There are no exceptions — not for shelving, not for tabletops, not for decorative mirrors.

Glass Thickness: 3/8" vs. 1/2"

The two most common thicknesses for residential and commercial glass are 3/8" and 1/2". Here's how to think about which one you need:

3/8" tempered glass is the standard choice for most shower enclosures, interior partitions, shelving, and tabletops. It's lighter, easier to handle during installation, and works well for spans up to about 36 inches without additional support.

1/2" tempered glass is the right choice for larger panels, frameless shower doors over 36 inches wide, exterior railings, and any application where the glass will bear significant lateral load. It has a noticeably more substantial feel and is the preferred spec for high-end residential projects.

Edge Finishing Options

The edge of a glass panel matters more than most people realize. Raw-cut glass has a sharp, unfinished edge that's both a safety hazard and an aesthetic problem. Every piece we fabricate receives one of the following edge treatments:

Seamed edge — a light grind to remove sharpness; used where the edge will be hidden in a frame or channel.

Flat polished edge — smooth and clean; the standard for most exposed edges.

Beveled edge — an angled polish that catches light; popular for mirrors and decorative glass.

Pencil polished edge — a slightly rounded profile; common for shelving and tabletops.

The Fabrication Process

Here's what happens between your quote request and installation day:

Step 1: Measurement and templating — for complex shapes, we template the space directly before cutting.

Step 2: Cutting — glass is cut to your exact dimensions using precision CNC equipment.

Step 3: Tempering — cut panels go through the tempering oven. Note that glass cannot be cut or drilled after tempering, so all cutouts for hardware must be done before this step.

Step 4: Edge finishing — edges are ground and polished to the specified profile.

Step 5: Hardware fitting — hinges, handles, clips, and channels are fitted and tested.

Step 6: Quality inspection — every panel is inspected for optical clarity, edge quality, and hardware alignment before it leaves our shop.

What to Expect in Southwest Florida's Climate

Naples and the surrounding area present a few specific considerations for glass installations.

Humidity and hardware corrosion. Coastal air accelerates corrosion on inferior hardware. We use marine-grade stainless steel and powder-coated aluminum for all exterior and pool-adjacent applications.

Pool and outdoor railings. Florida building code requires tempered glass for pool barriers. We fabricate to current Collier and Lee county code requirements.

Hurricane impact. Standard tempered glass is not impact-rated. If you need hurricane-rated glass for an exterior application, let us know — we can source laminated impact glass and fabricate it to your specifications.
